Japanese Tea House
The art and culture of the Japanese Tea Ceremony
“There is something in the nature of tea that leads us into a world of quiet contemplation of life.” – Lin Yutang
Japan is known worldwide for its traditional arts; from which Heather at Qii House draws much inspiration. One of them is the Japanese Tea Ceremony or way of tea, a cultural activity which involves the ceremonial presentation of powdered green tea or “matcha.”
The Japanese Tea Ceremony represents harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity which we must embrace in order to achieve the main purpose of the tea ceremony. Zen Buddhism is the primary influence in the conceptualization of the Tea ceremony.
A temple like sanctuary
The Qii Tea House is a garden room elevated into a rainforest setting. It is a temple like sanctuary. Here the simple art of green tea drinking is not an ego driven gathering, but rather, a portal to contemplation, inner peace, and heart centred connection.
A perfect way to relax and to detox after a ” Forest Bathing “ session along the INFTA accredited “Zaborin Walk”. Or an ideal potion whilst in the outdoor hot tub.

Wellness Experience of the Year – Qii House
Built as a private property in 1977, Qii House has since been transformed into an eco-meditation and relaxation retreat by current owner Heather Kolb. Featuring a unique and somewhat quirky design, the property seamlessly blends in with its natural surroundings deep within the lush rainforests of the Great Otway National Park.
Reinvention in the Rainforest: Building Qii House
She didn’t plan to buy a rainforest. It started with a detour—one of many spontaneous drives along the Great Ocean Road that followed the quiet chaos of widowhood. But this time, something tugged at her more than usual. A hillside retreat, wild and worn, hidden beneath the lush Otway canopy, whispered, “This is it.”
